Carved and printed by hand, this woodcut print is a study of the beauty of nature, ink, and paper. With spring melt pouring off the side of the valley, and Halfdome standing sentry at the horizon, each of the seven colors in this print work together to create a layered study of an iconic California view, captured during a hike up the Upper Yosemite Falls trail in Yosemite National Park.
Printed on a 12” x 16” hand-torn sheet of Nishinougchi paper using a two plate, double reduction woodcut technique, this print features a beautiful full bleed, emphasizing the natural deckled edge of the paper. The edition was printed at Eric’s studio in the Sierra Nevada foothills, as well as the Lincoln, Nebraska studio of Karen Kunc, who perfected this technique and was a wonderful mentor to Eric as he created this piece, his most challenging to date.
This print has scarcity, as the woodcut reduction method requires the destruction of the wood block as the print is produced. Eric started with 50 sheets of paper, and has determined only 30 of the resulting prints are worthy of a numbered edition.
